ABSTRACT

Agriculture in India plays an important role in the development of the rural economy by providing income and employment. However, in recent times productivity of the agricultural sector has seen a significant downfall due to various reasons. Due to reduced productivity, production losses, marketing losses etc, a large part of rural population is shifting from agricultural to non-agricultural source of employment. Government has launched several programs and policies to keep farming a viable business. Even after several roadblocks, government has been successful in achieving its objective but still a large part of farming community is left behind. Agricultural scientists have developed several models, which have proven to be quiet successful in increasing farm production as well as productivity. Integrated farming system is one such model that not only helps in increasing farm income but also reduces dependence of farmers on external resources on a large extent. A successful integrated farming system can become an ecosystem in itself, which will ensure year-round income to farmer even when there is crop failure.
