Abstract
Saffron, known as kesar, is the world`s most expensive spice. Despite India`s being the second-largest cultivator globally, its saffron production has faced challenges, notably lower productivity than leading producers like Iran, Spain, and Greece. To address this, the Indian saffron industry must enhance production and productivity by diversifying cultivation, implementing intensive production systems, and refining processing and marketing strategies to compete globally. Expanding saffron cultivation to non-traditional areas is a viable solution, particularly in regions like Arunachal Pradesh. The hilly terrain, temperate climate, and unique geographical features of this area offer opportunities for saffron cultivation. However, prudent planning necessitates initial trials in non-traditional areas like Dirang in the West Kameng District. Harnessing the unique conditions of Arunachal Pradesh for saffron cultivation holds promise for revitalizing India`s saffron industry. Through strategic initiatives and careful evaluation, India can bolster saffron productivity, meet market demands, and secure its position as a competitive player in the global saffron market, benefiting both growers and consumers.
