Postbiotics: An Eco-Friendly Strategy for Improving Aquaculture Health and Efficiency

Author : Philominal Pathinathan

Abstract

Postbiotics, including alcohols, bacteriocins, enzymes, and organic acids, offer physiological benefits by mimicking probiotics through distinct mechanisms. Unlike probiotics, postbiotics don`t rely on live microbes, eliminating concerns about bacterial viability during storage and reducing the need for expensive cold chains. Their stable concentration of bioactive compounds enhances labeling accuracy. In aquaculture, postbiotics have shown potential as safer, more environmentally friendly alternatives to antibiotics, promoting growth, enhancing immunity, reducing disease, and improving water quality in shrimp farming. Despite their promise, more research is needed to fully understand their mechanisms and limitations. Furthermore, because postbiotics lack the variability associated with live microbes, their concentration of bioactive chemicals remains constant from manufacture to storage, improving labeling accuracy.
