Lead (Pb) is one of the important toxic heavy metals and accumulates in soil as a result of human, agricultural and industrial activities. Plants grown in lead contaminated soil show decline in growth and development. Lead inhibits activities of many enzymes involved in metabolic process of plants and affects the photosynthesis process. Excess Pb causes a number of toxicity symptoms in plants e.g. stunted growth, chlorosis and blackening of root. This article focuses sources lead that contaminates soil, effect of lead toxicity on plant and human body and also different remediation strategies followed to reduce the lead toxicity in soils.
