Abstract

Large cardamom, a significant cash crop in the Eastern Himalaya, supports the economy and livelihoods of farming communities in regions such as Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Arunachal Pradesh. However, various biotic and abiotic factors like viral and fungal diseases, climate change, fluctuating market prices, and inadequate infrastructure challenges its optimum production and productivity. Strategies to address these challenges include developing and disseminating disease-resistant varieties, implementing sustainable agricultural practices, improving post-harvest processing, and enhancing market access. Additionally, government organizations and NGOs must provide support in the form of training programs and infrastructure development. By adopting these strategies, farmers in the Eastern Himalaya can enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability in large cardamom cultivation, ensuring a stable economic future. Keywords: Large Cardamom, Eastern Himalaya, Climate resilience, Integrated pest management, Market access, and Eastern Himalayan agriculture.
