Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) an alien invasive insect pest in India and their Management

ABSTRACT
Fall armyworm introduced in India recently and first reported from Shimoga, Karnataka in 2018. However, its appearance in 2019 was noticed in many states of the country, which indicates spreading potential of this pest. This is a polyphagous pest thus, affected array of crops, mainly cereals and forage grasses. The peculiar identification marks of the pest are presence of four black spot arranged in square pattern on the second abdominal segment and inverted “Y” marked on the head region. Caterpillar is the only damaging stage; initially it feeds upon leaves and during later stage it feeds on the cob. After appearance, management of the pest is very difficult hence; integrated pest management strategy should be followed to control the pest below economic threshold level.
