Abstract

Despite India being one of the world`s largest producers and consumers of milk and milk products, three out of four Indians are affected by lactose intolerance. This has prompted a shift in many consumers’ preferences towards lactose-free and plant-based dairy alternatives. The Indian dairy industry is responding by offering a variety of lactose-free products and exploring plant-based substitutes to cater to the growing demand. This article examines the dietary, cultural, and economic implications of lactose intolerance in India, as well as the adjustments made by and the necessity of striking a balance between custom and changing dietary requirements. It emphasises the importance of inclusive and health-conscious choices in the evolving landscape of Indian diets.
