Author : Chandini Pradhan and Purushottam Dev

ABSTRACT

Brick kilns are significant part behind modern infrastructure in today’s world. They are increasing in numbers since there is expansion of cities and population. The demand is further going to rise leading to further increase in number of brick kilns. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze and monitor the effect of these industries on environment specially soil. Since clay is a major raw material from which bricks are manufactured a major portion of top fertile soil is being excavated for this process leading to loss of agricultural land. Indian brick industries consume about 700-750 million tonnes of clay annually, which is a major portion of fertile soils. Moreover, brick industry also contributes to pollution and contamination of soil in adjoining area. Therefore, necessary measures must be taken to regulate the impact of these kilns on soil, so that the up-coming expansion of these kilns does not create havoc on soil.
