Zinc Bio-Fortification for Better Human Nutrition
Author : Kiran Kumar Mohapatra, Satish Kumar Singh, Abhik Patra
In developing countries, Zinc (Zn) represents an important health problem, caused mainly by inadequate dietary intake. Modern cereals cultivars have inherently little concentrations of Zn and cannot meet the complete human need for Zn. Agricultural strategies used for improvement of the nutritional value of crop plants are known as bio-fortification strategies. Given the fact that the Zn concentrations required to achieve a measurable impact on human health are well and to avoid any loss of yield from Zn deficiency, providing crop plants with sufficient Zn through the agronomic and genetic strategy under field conditions. This article deals with the processes of zinc bio fortification.
