Women and Climate Change: Issues and way forward

Author : Kushagra Joshi, Janvi Kochar, Renu Jethi and L Kant

ABSTRACT

Climate change is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. The impact of climate change varies among classes, age, income groups, generations and genders. There is evidence that the resource-poor population is more vulnerable than those having more access to resources. Women are more dependent upon natural resources but have less access to them. When vulnerability to the impacts of climate change is determined by one`s adaptive capacity and when one`s adaptive capacity is determined by the availability and accessibility to the available resources, it is fairly established that women are more vulnerable to climate-induced changes than men are. This article discusses the gendered effects of climate change and the steps required to overcome these issues.

Keywords: Women; climate change; risks; adaptation
