ABSTRACT

Vermicomposting is a system that decomposes organic waste using worms; Eisenia fetida to produce vermicompost. Vermicompost has higher nutrients and beneficial microorganism that enhances crop yield and improves soil properties compared to farm yard manure. Systems of vermicomposting are batch/static, continuous flow and underground bed. The basic requisite for vermicomposting is vermibag, earthworms, feedstock, bedding material and animal dung. The batch/static system is feasible for small scale production. The low-cost high-density polyethylene (HDPE) vermibags is a static system carried out in farmers’ field of Arunachal Pradesh which is found to be a profitable source of income as estimated B:C ratio was 1.67-1.98.
