The Crab Microbiome: An epiphany

Author : Manimozhi E , Porkodi M, Panimaya Rensa Maria

ABSTRACT

Crustacean farming is a lucrative industry in aquaculture, with shrimp culture contributing the most. The disease is a significant threat in shrimp farming. Diversification is needed to avoid loss due to diseases. Crab culture is a promising alternative to shrimp farming due to its market demand and export value. The "milky disease" and "sleeping disease" are two of the most severe diseases that would cause up to 60–70% mortalities, resulting in mass economic loss in crab culture. The microbiome of healthy and diseased animals varies usually. Microbiome studies will give baseline data about the microbial diversity of the particular species. It will be helpful to combat the disease threat eventually.

Keywords: microbiome, crab culture, crab microflora, crustacean
