Author : Bineeta Satpathy
ABSTRACT
The prevalence of floods in Bihar has a detrimental impact on the lives and livelihoods of the farming community, and food security has become a major concern. It is the responsibility of institutions, departments, and the government dealing with agriculture and farmers to make the farming community flood resilient. The most significant outcome of this effort is ensuring food security, which in turn has a positive impact on the environment and ecology. However, the Green Revolution heavily relied on fertilizers and other chemicals, leading to toxicity in food. According to a need assessment survey, food scarcity is a significant issue in flood-prone areas. The survey also showed that during floods, 58% of respondents lost access to food grains, and 78% lacked access to vegetables and fruits. This article sheds light on the noteworthy scientific initiatives undertaken by DR Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, located in Pusa, Bihar. These technological interventions aim to strengthen the existing production system in flood-prone ecosystems, moving towards achieving the dream of a second green revolution and sustaining vulnerable livelihoods.
