Techniques used in Electrochemical Bio-sensing of Heavy Metal Ions
Author : Priya Saini
ABSTRACT
Now a days heavy-metal pollution is a main concern, as their accumulative effects pose a major hazard to all components of the ecosystem. Most of these metals are carcinogens and are closely linked to several diseases due to free radical formation. Hence, accurate and fast detection of these ions has become a critical issue. Some of the metal ions such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury, chromium and lead are considered to be very toxic. To detect these metal ions, electrochemical biosensors with interfaces such as microorganisms, microspheres, enzymes, nanomaterials like nanoparticles of silver and gold, carbon nanotubes, and metal oxides have been developed. In this article some of the techniques used for electrochemical sensing of heavy metal ions are discussed.
