Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI) Technology: Boon for Sugarcane Grower

ABSTRACT

Sugar industry in India is the second largest among the agro based processing industry after textile Industry. Area under sugarcane cultivation in India is 49.60 Lakh ha with a national productivity 70 tons/ha. Although it is a cash crop and sugar industries are dependent on it but due to low production it is not affordable crop to the farmers, and due to low sugar recovery industrialist are finding it difficult to operate the sugar factories profitably. Therefore, innovative technologies are the need of the hour. Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI) Technology is such one, which has tremendous potential.  The technology ensures saving of water, labour, time, energy, money on one hand at the same time quality planting material of sugarcane increases the production and productivity of sugarcane and reduces the cost of cultivation results in maximum profit per unit area because of introduction of intercrop.
