ABSTRACT
One of the most popular ways for people to interact with aquatic life and ecosystems is through recreational fishing. It is a great way to let go and enjoy yourself and even medical professionals encourage it for this purpose. When compared to fishing for food or money, sport fishing (also known as recreational fishing) is done purely for fun. There are references to fishing in ancient Greek, Assyrian, Roman, and Jewish texts showing that it is an ancient practice. The first known Indian writing on recreational fisheries is King Somesvara`s (1127 AD) chapter on angling (Matsyavinoda) in his treatise Manasollosa. Now, the involvement of high-end equipment such as echo sounding devices and carbon fiber rods make the activity more adventurous. Accordingly, Recreational fisheries activity has the potential to generate massive money. There is a big gap between scientific knowledge and coordination among government and recreational fishermen which led to the absence of a uniform, healthy regulatory measures for holistic management of recreational fishing which need to be addressed without any further delay. The viability of India`s recreational fishing industry relies heavily on the participation of the rural people of such popular fishing areas. Citizen science projects and fisheries management are two ways that might actively promote crucial scientific inquiry in recreational fishing. This article conveys the importance of recreational fisheries, important sport fishes and recreational fishing sites, major threats to sport fishing and the possible solutions to address the problem in this field.
