The increasing demand for water among various sectors has raised serious concerns for future agriculture. This scenario can be overcome by proper water management based on the soil-plant atmospheric demand and also through the use of sensor-based technology to enhance water productivity and profitability in irrigated agriculture. This article briefly describes various soil, plant and weather-based sensors used in agriculture for scheduling irrigation and overcoming moisture stress. The use of sensors in irrigation can help to overcome the drawbacks of traditional irrigation and assist in scheduling irrigation at the right time, right quantity and also at the right place.
