ABSTRACT
Physical dormancy (often called as hardseededness), generally found in legumes such as mung bean, restricts the seeds to geminate at desired time. In mung bean, development of hard seeds involves the presence of a water-impermeable seed coat, due to the presence of phenolics and suberin-impregnated layers of palisade cells and cutin in the hilum region. The trait is governed by both genetic and environmental factors. In this article we discussed how to reduce the proportion of hard seeds by modification of sowing time. Results showed that the proportion of hard seeds was significantly lower in seed lots produced in summer season compared to kharif season due to higher atmospheric temperature at the time of seed maturity in case of summer sowing.
