Role of Development Journalism in Agriculture and Rural Development of India

ABSTRACT

Communication is essential for development but the more important role is played by the medium, which act as catalyst in making the communication more effective, accessible, affordable and far reaching Journalism has played crucial role in development through mass media including both electronic as well as print media. Projects like Radio Rural Forum, Farm School on AIR, SITE Experiment, Farm and Home Unit through electronic media and LEISA India, Adike Patrike through print media have played important role in catalysing agriculture and rural development. With the changing global scenario, the definition of journalism has been broadening in India also. In present scenario, where mainstream media highlights burning and political issues, development journalism is paving way for unheard voice of farmers and rural people. In agrarian nation like India, the need of hour is to strengthen the fourth pillar of democracy in light of agriculture and rural development.
