Role of Biostimulants towards Sustainable Agriculture: A Review

Author : Deblina Roy

ABSTRACT

The use of non-chemical crop production materials known as "plant biostimulants," which are marketed as environmentally beneficial substitutes for chemical-based goods, has increased dramatically in recent years. Although the organic agricultural industry is the main driver behind these materials, conventional farmers are becoming more and more interested in utilising them as a result of rising consumer expectations for more environmentally friendly, sustainable crop production and an increasing number of reports about their benefits. The biostimulant market was estimated to be worth $2.19 billion globally in 2018 and is expected to increase at a compound yearly growth rate of 12.5% between 2019 and 2024 (Albrecht, 2019). Though Europe has the biggest biostimulant market (with about 40% of the market share), the North American industry is expected to grow to $605.1 million by 2019 (Albrecht, 2019). An overview of plant biostimulants, their regulatory status, and the most widely used compounds in agriculture are given in this article.
