Revitalizing Agriculture: Unveiling Plant Ideotypes for Effective Drought Resilience
Author : S. K. Meena, B. K. Mehta and Ahmed, S.
ABSTRACT
Plant ideotypes for better drought tolerance are a crucial approach to achieving global food security in the scenario of climate change. This approach involves identifying and selecting specific plant characteristics that provide optimal performance under limited moisture conditions. Understanding the mechanisms and physiological traits behind dehydration tolerance and avoidance is critical for developing ideal plant types that can withstand drought stress. Enhancing drought tolerance in improved plant varieties while maintaining stable yields is a critical requirement under unpredictable climatic conditions. Field trials play a major role in validating the effectiveness of these ideotypes in real-world conditions and assessing their practical application for drought tolerance. Researchers can assess the usefulness and potential of these ideotypes under various environmental conditions. Additionally, drought tolerance in crops can be enhanced by incorporating modern genetic engineering techniques. This provides a sustainable solution to food security challenges in the face of climate change.
