Resource identification and assessment in floodplain of Kamla Balan river in Bihar

ABSTRACT
Floods are natural hazards that damage the natural and human resources and affect millions of population every year. North Bihar is prone to flood and faced most destructive flood during the year 2017. Cultivable land and cropped area in Darbhanga and Madhubani districts got severely affected due to flooding in the catchment areas of Kamla Balan. To study the agricultural activities of the farmers in low lying stretches with prolonged water stagnation in the catchment area, a survey was conducted in the flood affected seven villages of Darbhanga and Madhubani district during 2020 for resource identification. Observations showed that flood occurs yearly in the month during July to September and leading inundation varying from one to three weeks. The depth of flooding reaches up to 1.5 in the catchment of the river. Rice is the main crop grown in this area. Besides growing high yielding semi-dwarf modern rice variety and hybrids, it was observed that farmers also grow traditional rice varieties having tolerance to prolonged water stagnation in low lying areas were identified and collected.
