However, India`s pulse production lags behind demand, leading to increased reliance on imports. This study evaluates India`s pulse production and trade, highlighting challenges and proposing remedies. Slow progress, limited technology, and competition hinder pulse industry growth. The study presents production and trade data, identifying key pulse-producing states and top importers. It projects a widening production-consumption gap, emphasizing the need for intervention. Assured pricing mechanisms and insurance programs can support pulse farmers and ensure stability. Promoting advanced techniques and high-yield cultivars is crucial. A comprehensive strategy encompassing legislation, research, and farmer-centric initiatives can enhance production, improve nutrition, and reduce import dependence, creating a sustainable pulse industry in India.
