ABSTRACT

In 2002 transgenic Bt-cotton for insect resistance has been introduced for commercial cultivation in India and it led to a major shift in Indian transgenic crop research. Cultivation of Bt-cotton gives a maximum economic return to the farmer which helps to improve their livelihood. In Oct 2009 GEAC approved Bt-brinjal for commercial cultivation, however, various apprehension raised, therefore the Government of India formally declared a moratorium on 9 Feb 2010. In 2017, GEAC approved GM mustard for commercially release but final approval from the government is still pending. Several transgenic crops are still in a laboratory or containment facility due to slow progress decision making and a huge gap between policymakers, scientists and farmers in India.
