ABSTRACT
Cotton productivity and area under cultivation was reduced in India due to recurrent bollworm infestation before the adoption of Bt-cotton in 2002. Subsequently, area and productivity both increased one of the reasons for yield stagnation in India at 454±50 kg lint/ha over the past 14 years from 2005 to 2019 is the cultivation of a vast number of unsuitable hybrids. Bt cotton technology per se cannot be blamed for yield stagnation. Unlike other cotton-growing countries where open-pollinated Bt-cotton varieties are grown, Indian cotton farmers depend on Bt-hybrids which have lots of problems over open-pollinated Bt-cotton varieties.
