Precision Agriculture Revolution: Advancing with Site-Specific Nutrient Management for Sustainable Farming
Author : Sunil Kumar Prajapati and Kuldeep Patel
ABSTRACT Site-Specific Nutrient Management (SSNM) uses precision agriculture technologies to match plant nutrients to their specific spatial and temporal requirements, and reducing under or over fertilization. In India, where soil pH varies widely, SSNM can help to regulate spatial soil nutrient variations and reduces nutrient losses, boosting fertilizer efficiency and reducing economic stress on farmers. It has already demonstrated significant potential, particularly for high value crops. India`s SSNM approach is in its early stage. Public-private sector and grower coordination will be vital to unlocking the full potential of SSNM, building a more sustainable future. It is an approach aimed at optimizing fertilizer application by tailoring nutrient inputs to the specific needs of different areas within a field. By integrating soil testing, crop nutrient requirements, yield potential assessment, and advanced technologies such as variable rate application (VRA) and decision support systems (DSS), SSNM maximizes nutrient use efficiency, minimizes environmental impacts, and enhances crop productivity and profitability. |
