Population Status and Conservation Strategies of Ganges River dolphin, Platanista gangetica (Roxburgh, 1801)

Author : Suman Nama

ABSTRACT

Platanista gangetica (Roxburgh, 1801) is an endemic fauna of the Indian subcontinent. It is mostly found in slow flowing riverine pools. They play vital role in maintaining the ecology of the riverine ecosystem. Several eco-tourism spots have been developed based on their abundance. But due to anthropogenic activities such as hunting for meat, water pollution, etc. their population has been declined up to a great extent. As a result, the biodiversity of the riverine ecosystem is being compromised to fulfil our desire. So, we need to adopt the best management strategies and strict enforcement action against the defaulters to conserve the species before they will extinct from the ecosystem. In this regard, the government and NGOs have to take a lead role to promote the conservation policies of P. gangetica.
