The conventional water application method and water lost in the distribution network result in a wide gap in irrigation water productivity in India; it is only 40- 60% of the world`s average. About 60% of water is lost in the conveyance and seepage system itself. Looking at the above facts, efficient water management assumes paramount importance in the sustainability of agriculture and eventually in food security. Plasticulture (use of plastic) in agricultural water management is an interesting intervention in the efficient management of scarce water for improving agricultural production.
