Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals and Disposal of Metal Contaminated Plants

Author : Rahul Mishra, Ashish Rai, Eetela Sathyanarayana and Rajeev Kumar Srivastava

Non-degradable nature of heavy metals and its contamination in soil as well as water may now become a serious concern globally due to its negative impact on human health. In present time; physical, chemical and biological approaches are widely used to remediate heavy metals from environment, while in biological approach when plants are used as a tool to overcome the heavy metal toxicity known as phytoremediation. Phyto-extraction is one of the phyto-remediation approaches which reduces heavy metal content in soil and decreases environmental risk imposed by toxic metals. In this approach, hyper accumulator plants are used which transfer toxic elements from soil to plant and creating different nature of environmental hazard, thereby soil remediation and heavy metal contaminated biomass are simultaneously formed. This generated biomass required suitable methods for disposal but a low cost and environmental friendly method yet to be developed which can be used on large scale.
