Papaya Black Spot Disease Caused by Asperisporium Caricae (Speg.) Maubl

Papaya is an important and vital table fruit crop of tropical and sub-tropical countries. The low yield of papaya is mainly attributed due to the occurrence of several diseases; one of the most serious fungal diseases is black spot of papaya caused by Asperisporium caricae which infects both dorsal as well as on ventral surface of the leaves, and surface of fruits. The characteristic symptoms consist of round, grey to black colored necrotic spots which are encircled by a yellow halo. The disease incidence is seasonal, with the majority of cases occurring in late winter and early spring. The importance of the disease and management practices are discussed in this report.
