Multi-coloured and Nutra-rich Broccoli cultivation in Sub-tropical Region of India

ABSTRACT

Vegetable consist an important component of the balance diet for human beings. They supply important vitamins and minerals that the human body need for the healthy and active life. Broccoli is the most nutritious member of cole group belonging to family Brassicaceae. Its marketable plant part is ‘Head’ composed of immature flowers or florets. It is very popular in the developed world because of its highly nutritional and medicinal properties. It is recommended for consumption as a major to decrease incidence of human cancer. Broccoli is of them, considered most nutritive, high anti-oxidant, and having anti-cancer properties than other vegetable crops, paying a way to reduce cancer and degenerative disease. Multi-coloured varieties are not only, eye appealing, consumer attractant but also having enriched pigments such as anthocyanin, beta-carotene and green coloured cultivars are suited for freezing, processing and thereby, suited for contract farming. Owing his, high nutritive value, broccoli cultivation gained momentum in India mainly to catch up demand in five stars hotel for delicacy of the foreign, and also due to extensive research has been done at IARI for developing cultivars.
