ABSTRACT
Crop improvement relies on the identification of desirable genes and superior genotypes possessing such genes in a breeding population. The selection of such genes and genotypes is facilitated by marker-assisted selection (MAS). MAS can reduce the breeding cycle by about 4 years which would amount to saving $200 million in 25 years. In this article traits for which MAS is being applied in different crops and MAS products developed in India has been described.
