ABSTRACT

Mushrooms have been an integral part of traditional medicine in various cultures for centuries. In India, the use of medicinal mushrooms dates back to ancient times, where they were valued for their therapeutic properties. These fungi have gained recognition not only for their nutritional value but also for their potential to treat various health conditions and also have been utilized for centuries in traditional medicine across various cultures. Medicinal mushrooms, such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s mane), Cordyceps militaris, Hypsizygus ulmarius (Elm oyster mushroom) etc., play a crucial role in human health due to their rich bioactive compounds and therapeutic properties, helping the body defend against infections and diseases. These edible fungi possess potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties contributing to enhanced immune function and disease prevention. They are also very potential in supporting cardiovascular health, combating stress and even exhibiting anti-cancer properties. Incorporating medicinal mushrooms into the human diet or as supplements may offer a natural and holistic approach to promoting overall well-being. This article delves into the importance of medicinal mushrooms and provides a list of these healing wonders.
