Livelihood Improvement through Soil and Water Management Options in Tribal Villages of Katol Taluka, Nagpur district, Maharashtra, India: A Success Story

With the objective of livelihood improvement through production and productivity enhancement in tribal villages, by adopting the best soil and water management options, National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS & LUP), Nagpur has implemented Schedule Tribe Component (STC) in five tribal villages (Mhasada, Miniwada, Malkapur, Kawdimet and Ghubadi) of Katol taluka, Nagpur district, Maharashtra during last 2017-18 to 2019-20 (three years). Results of the study showed that during the intervention period significant improvement in crop productivity and farmers’ income were observed. A total of 160 tribal farmers benefitted and adopted the improved the soil and water suitability crop plans from the STC programme. About 64.75 ha area covered under the project resulted the soil based cultivation of kharif and rabi crop`s average yield increased by 27% to 74% and profit increased by 38% to 132% as compare to farmers` practices.
