ABSTRACT

Lipids are one of the major components of living cell with diversified functions from acting as physical barrier membrane to signalling components. Sessile plant withstands different abiotic (eg. Temperature, salt, heavy metal etc) and biotic (eg. Pathogens) stresses by altering the membrane lipid composition and fluidity. Mono galactosyl diacyl glycerol (MGDG) v/s di-galactosyl diacyl glycerol (DGDG); Saturated v/s unsaturated lipid ratios play a crucial role in plant survival and stress tolerance. Various signalling lipids such as phosphatidic acid, phosphoinositides, sphingolipids, lysophospholipids, oxylipins, free fatty acids `work in a complex signalling network to receive and relay stress stimuli, which ultimately leads controlled gene expression. This intricate lipid chemistry is a key mechanism for plant survival in stress.
