Kalanamak Rice (Oryza sativa L.): An aromatic rice landrace of eastern U.P, India

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the importance of preserving landrace rice variety kalanamak, also known as Buddha rice, is associated with Lord Buddha and has a unique aroma and quality. Its origins date back thousands of years and is mainly cultivated in a specific region in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Kalanamak is a naturally scented rice with a long history of cultivation and cultural significance, but it is facing extinction due to low yield. To save kalanamak rice variety efforts are needed to improve their grain quality and yield, promote and market their unique traits, and conserve their genetic diversity and cultural heritage. This rice was chosen as one of these nutri-crop due to its high levels of Iron and Zinc, which help to prevent diseases caused by nutrient deficiencies and the low Glycemic index of 49-52 of kalanamak rice holds the first position among other rice varieties. A multi-faceted approach that necessary to achieve these goals.
