Importance of “Bud Chip Technique” in sugarcane cultivation

ABSTRACT
In conventional method of sugarcane planting, a huge quantity of cane stalk cuttings of 6-8 t/ha (nearly 10% of total produce) having 2-3 bud pieces is requiredas a seeding material, results a major expenditure in sugarcane production. This large mass of planting material also poses a great problem in transport, handling and storage of seed cane and prone to rapid deterioration thus reducing the viability of buds and subsequently their sprouting. Sustainable sugarcane initiative through planting of bud chips, which can save the cost and inconveniences associated with conventional planting methods seeming very promising and economically viable technique. Bud chip technique involves separating the buds alone from cane and planting settlings raised from buds in a nursery using small plastic cups or trays. After chipping away buds, remaining canes can be sold to derive income.
