Impact of Elevated CO2 and Temperature on Plant Carbon Metabolism
Author : Heena Rani and Rahul Sen
ABSTRACT
In the past 400,000 years, the concentration of CO2 ranged between 200 ppm to 280 ppm but since the mid-19th century, its concentration has been increasing and reached 410 ppm in June 2018. Rising concentrations of CO2, along with other greenhouse gases, have led to an increase in mean annual global temperatures by 0.8°C. Probably the concentrations of CO2 will be between 550-1000 ppm by the end of the century, resulting in a rise of global mean atmospheric temperature by another 1–3.7°C. Since plant carbon metabolism is affected in a large noticeable portion by the rising atmospheric CO2 and temperature. This article briefly summarizes the response of plant carbon metabolism to elevated CO2 and climate warming.
