Author : Rahul Sen, Heena Rani and Simardeep Kaur
ABSTRACT
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a highly prevalent disease worldwide and is characterized by an alteration in lipid profile, imbalance in blood glucose level and increased blood pressure. This disease has become a burden to the global economy as it induces the onset of various other diseases. International Diabetes Federation predicted that there will be 592 million diabetes cases along with 175 million undiagnosed cases by 2035. Various studies reported that changes in gut microbiota could cause modulation in intestinal permeability, inflammation, fatty acid and glucose metabolism which synergistically contribute to insulin resistance whereas restoration of gut microbiota has beneficial effects and improve glycemic control in patients with T2DM. This article briefly summarizes the role of gut microbiota in managing T2DM.
