Farm Pond Transformed Farmers Fortune in Semi-Arid Tropics of Karnataka: A Success Story

ABSTRACT

The study presents a success story of a small farmer dependent on rainfed farming making use of farm ponds in the semi-arid tropics to make his agriculture successful. Farmer used to cultivate traditional field crops in his farm for his livelihood and family sustenance. Due to uncertainty and delay in rainfall, and prolonged drought, farmer encountered huge financial loss due to partial or complete failure of crops. A technological intervention through pond has supported the farmers in drought prone areas and has improved his farming. Harvesting of rainwater and run-off stored in pond was used for critical life-saving irrigations and helped the farmer to diversify his cropping pattern towards high value crops and increased his crop yields and farm income. Consequently, the socio-economic status of the farmer has improved due to the adoption of farm pond.
