Exploring the sustainable strategies for moisture stress mitigation in Millet

Author : Saikat Dey, Anannya Dhar and Sukamal Sarkar

ABSTRACT

Millets, commonly referred to as Nutri cereals, are emerging as a promising crop with widespread consumption as both food for humans and feed for livestock. Rich in essential nutrients, protein, fiber, and other beneficial elements, millets possess significant potential in mitigating abiotic stresses. However, the effect of climate change, particularly in the form of moisture shortages and extreme temperatures surpassing the threshold level, can lead to substantial changes in crop production and yield loss. Millet exhibits climate-resilient traits, including broad adaptability to diverse ecosystems, high water use efficiency, reduced input requirements, diminished reliance on chemical fertilizers, and adaptability to certain environmental stresses. To counter the effects of drought on millets, various agronomic approaches such as conservation tillage, soil amendment application, and strategic planting times have been developed. Additionally, breeding strategies involve the identification of stress-tolerant traits and the improvement of stress-tolerant genotypes to bolster the resilience of millet crops in this era of adverse climatic conditions.
