ABSTRACT
Growing population and rising demand for staple food crops in developing countries require enhancement in crop production. Increased crop productivity as well as pest and diseases control can pave for overall development. Microorganisms play a significant role in promoting plant growth and improving soil quality through their effects on plant physiology and biochemical processes. Metagenomics is one of the important tools to identify, detect and quantify the pathogenicity of microorganisms which involves the study of structure and function of the entire nucleotide sequences isolated in a bulk sample from an organism. For sustainable agricultural practices, the plant and microbe interaction within the rhizosphere holds significance, giving rise to valuable bioactive compounds. Metagenomics proved to be an indispensable tool in biotechnology having greater utility in finding novel genes, enzymes and molecules involved in bioactive pathways. In this article, we reviewed the microorganism-derived compounds and their immense role in agriculture systems.
