Effective Nutrient Management Options for Pigeonpea under Rainfed Condition

Author : Shivani Ranjan and Sumit Sow

ABSTRACT

India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world. In order to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses, productivity needs to be enhanced. Pigeon pea is the second major pulse next to chickpea in terms of area and production. The yield of crops is not very high under rainfed conditions due to several soil- crop-related constraints, especially abiotic stresses, abrupt climatic changes, insect pests and diseases, and increasing deficiency of secondary and micronutrients in the soil. The application of organics such as FYM and/or bio-compost in combination with inorganic fertilizer might enhance crop production to a certain extent. Thus, efficient integrated nutrient management strategies will increase the yield of pigeon pea and soil nutrient status.
