The government of India (GOI) launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan scheme (PM-KUSUM) in 2019, to solarize the irrigation scenario of farmers and help in the promotion of renewable energy. Here, the goal of the scheme is to make the farmers energy-independent and rely on renewable energy sources rather than being dependent on electricity or diesel for irrigation.  The state with its vast natural resources holds the scope to emerge as one of the farmers-friendly states if proper irrigation facilities are available to farmers in the unconnected districts.  The article focuses on Keonjhar district, where solar farmers were interviewed about the efficacy of the PM-KUSUM scheme, and how they can be self-sufficient and grow more crops in a year with solar.
