Condition Assessment and Coping Strategies for Contamination and Washing Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder During Pandemic (nCOVID-19): A Psychological Perspective

The ascending statistics of mental disease all over the world is really a matter of concern in this modern progressive era of human existence. The end of 2nd decade of the 3rd millennium has witnessed a novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as pandemic, which has not only increased morbidity but put negative impacts on mental health too. It is therefore essential to provide proper attention to specific psychiatric conditions that may be initiated or aggravated by mishap. Perhaps no group of individuals with mental illness is as directly affected by the exacerbating outbreak of COVID-19 as people living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is a mental health condition affecting 2-3% of global population. The spike in anxiety about the virus is fuelling existing obsessive fears of contamination and further triggering redundant compulsive actions in some people having a particular sub-type of OCD known as ‘Contamination & Washing OCD’. This article provides a general overview of OCD and attempts to find out the changes of symptoms in ‘Contamination & Washing OCD’ and their pragmatic management approaches during and post coronavirus crisis.
