Climatic crisis and Coral bleaching

Author : Manjari

Corals provide habitat to a range of marine life and are therefore also called ‘rainforest of the sea’. In last few decades, their survival is threatened by increased climatic and human activities and these are indirectly resulting in loss of marine biodiversity due to one or the other reason. Rising anthropogenic CO2 levels, simultaneous increase in atmospheric and sea surface temperatures, frequent extreme weather events, increased marine traffic and associated pollutants in ocean water; all together have disturbed the environment that corals need to survive and proliferate. This article describes the climate change and its implications on coral reefs and related factors causing coral bleaching.
