Climate Change Impact on Seed Quality

Author : N Nithya, A Brindha, V Prakasam and K Basavaraj

Food security depends on seed security and the international seed industry must be able to continue to deliver the quantities of quality seed required for this purpose. Climate change poses several challenges for continued production of high quality seeds. Combination of shifting the location and sowing time is needed to avoid these problems. Seed enhancement (Seed Coating and Seed Hardening), Novel breeding approaches for high germinable varieties and hybrids displaying photo and thermo-insensitive nature, with high concentration of advantageous chemical components (sugars, protein, lipids and others) and enzymes will further widen the way to combat against climate change.
