Author : Gunjan Bhandari and Babita Kathayat

ABSTRACT

Haryana has emerged as one of the pioneers of green revolution by undertaking intensive cultivation of rice and wheat, chartered the path of food self-sufficiency for India. Driven by the higher yields, farmers in the state resorted to heavy usage of agrochemicals and irrigation. They also replaced the traditional cropping pattern by input intensive rice-wheat system, unwary of its side-effects. However, negative externalities in the form of groundwater depletion, land degradation, pest resurgence etc. started showing up in the following decades because of which the state is incurring huge irreversible damage. Seeing all these adverse effects of conventional agriculture while state of Sikkim has already turned fully organic but the way to organic farming for Haryana is ambiguous.
