Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) as a Functional Food and its Health Benefits

Abstract

Common buckwheat is a potential pseudo-cereal of secondary importance, can be grown in diverse climatic variables. It is being consumed as leafy vegetable as well as grain. The crop has also medicinal value and becomes a health food because of its high mineral and antioxidant content. Buckwheat is richer in minerals than common cereals. The most abundant minerals include Mn, Cu, Mg, Fe and P, are essential for metabolism, growth, development, ramparts body’s antioxidant and heart health. Magnesium lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The antioxidants include Rutin, Quercetin, Vitexin and D-chiro-inositol. Rutin is the main antioxidant; it lowers the risk of cancer and improves inflammation, blood sugar control, and blood lipid profile. Soluble dietary fibre cuts blood cholesterol levels. Mostly, buckwheat is a healthier choice for people with type 2 diabetes or those who want to improve their blood sugar balance.
