ABSTRACT
Buckwheat, a pseudo-cereal crop, can serve as an excellent animal feed/fodder due to its nutritional composition, versatility, and potential benefits for the well-being of farm animals. It can be fed to livestock as a feed (grains) or whole plant (fodder) based on the nutritional requirement of the animals. Buckwheat plants are rich in crude protein (17.8%), crude fibre (16.2%) and total ash (14.98%) which are essential for livestock productivity. The grains are rich in essential nutrients, including high-quality proteins, dietary fibre, vitamins (B-complex vitamins), minerals (such as magnesium, copper, and manganese), and antioxidants (rutin and quercetin). Buckwheat can be used as partial replacement to conventional fodder at the rate of 6.8 kg/day without performance loss in dairy cattle. Supplementing buckwheat with conventional feed at the rate of 10% to 30% of the total grain content can maintain the live weight and wool production in sheep. Buckwheat at the rate of 40% of dry matter can produce heavier eggs in poultry. By diversifying feed resources, buckwheat offers a sustainable and potentially cost-effective solution to address challenges associated with traditional feed sources.
